Fire Marshal

Who is the Fire Marshal & what are his responsibilities?

Fire Marshal Coomer

Fire Marshal James Coomer is a 40-year resident of Walled Lake and a 23-year veteran of our fire department. A 1983 Graduate of Walled Lake Western High School. He lives in the City with his wife Kim and two daughters.

He is a nationally certified fire inspector. Recognized this year “Pro Board” by the National Board on Fire Service Professionals as a fire investigator. He also has certifications in firefighters II, fire officer III, juvenile intervention specialist, licensed emergency medical technician, certified hazardous material operations, provisional state fire instructor,and has an associate degree in fire service technology. His primary responsibility is emergency response and reparedness. The Fire Marshal does double duty working 24 hours shift, responding to emergencies and performs Fire Marsahl activities.

 

Fire Prevention Division consist of the following areas of responsibilities:

Emergency response and Preparedness:

The Fire Marshal is assigned to 24 hours shift, responding to emergencies and performs Fire Marshal activities. emergencies. Fire Marshal Coomer responds and commands hundreds of calls annually. The Fire Department provides several types of emergency services and provides an outstanding quick response. Some of the emergency services our department provides include: fire extinguishment,emergency medical services, rescue emergencies and hazardous material emergencies.

Code Enforcement Inspections:

Chapter 38 of the Walled Lake City Code titled Fire Department Prevention Code. This ordinance adopts the 2003 International Fire Code with local amendments. The Division also has authority to enforce other codes and ordinances as they relate to fire and life safety. The Fire Marshal perform existing building inspections in all types of structures.

This also includes inspection and testing of fire protection systems including fire suppression, fire detection and alarm, and related systems in existing occupancies.

Plan Review:

The Fire Prevention Division's role in new construction includes inspection of construction methods as well as inspection and testing of fire protection systems including fire suppression, fire detection and alarm, smoke control, and related systems. Staff members interface on a daily basis with the Building Department to coordinate inspections for buildings under construction and renovation; Planning Department for new developments; and Engineering Department for water mains and hydrants.

Violation notices are issued when an inspection reveals fire code violations and safety related hazards.

Public Education:

Year round, members of the department are educating the public about fire safety awareness. Our department annually instructs thousands of school children from different area groups on fire safety. Our annual open house attracts hundreds of residents.

Fire Investigations:

State law mandates that all fires must be investigated. Fire Marshal Coomer is a certified fire investigator and
continues to keep his certifications current.

Investigate Fires - All fires are investigated for cause, in an effort to prevent future fires. When a fire is
undetermined or considered suspicious, it is turned over to investigators. If the fire is determined to be an arson, it
is pursued through the legal system to conclusion. If any citizen has any information on a fire, contact the Walled
Lake Fire Investigators at 248.624.3551 or call the Arson Control Hot line at 800.44.ARSON and be eligible for up to a $5,000 reward. Remember, arson is the second most costly crime in the country today!

Juvenile Fire Setter - This division is responsible for counseling and educating children who have either started or
