After receiving my BA from Michigan State University in 1988, I entered the corporate world. By the time I retired from business to become a stay at home Mom, I worked as a programmer consultant for a number of major Michigan corporations.
Our family has lived in Walled Lake since 1991, but having grown up in Farmington Hills, and having lived in Oakland County for more than 33 years, I'm very familiar with the area, its history, and its growth over time.
Walled Lake is a wonderful place to raise a family. In 1995, I decided to invest more energy in to the place that my family called home. I applied and received a mayoral appointment to the Walled Lake Parks and Recreation Commission, in 1995. In 1996, I was thrilled to receive a second mayoral appointment to the Walled Lake Downtown Development Authority (DDA). In just a few meetings, my DDA peers appointed me to the position of Vice-Chair. I have since chaired, co-chaired, vice-chaired, and worked hard on many different and diverse committees. I was elected to the Walled Lake City Council in 2001.
The most important issue facing any government is the constant creation, preservation, protection, and maintenance of the "community." In large part it is our local businesses that provide services and create our "quality of life." That said, Michigan cities have already been forced to make cuts due to shrinking State Revenue Sharing. Cities, including Walled Lake, are finding it difficult to provide quality services, as they are forced to eliminate services and cut staff - including core services: Fire, Police, and D.P.W.
When a citizen calls 911 they expect someone to answer. People depend on their city government to provide quality service in a timely manner. There must be a balance. Reliable city services; clean, safe neighborhoods; open store fronts; people in the parks; businesses, schools and service groups invested in the community: these things make a "municipality" a home. Government is the tool citizens use to build their community. Community is local government, property owners, institutions, non-profit organizations, businesses, customers, and each citizen, sharing responsibility and working together toward shared goals. Ultimately, it is the spirit of the people that makes a community. I am proud to be a member of this community - the community of Walled Lake.
